Bangers & Cash 2026: Where to Stay in North Yorkshire for Luxury and Comfort 2 The Square, Grassington: Honest Verdict for Solo Young Travellers

The auction series is filmed at Thornton-le-Dale near Pickering, so base yourself in York, Malton or Helmsley and treat the show as one stop on a proper North Yorkshire week.

Why the filming location shapes where you sleep

Bangers & Cash is filmed at Thornton-le-Dale, a village on the A170 about eight miles west of Pickering and roughly 26 miles from York by road — allow 50 minutes to an hour once you leave the ring road. Ryedale's lanes back up fast on a sunny Saturday, so staying in Pickering or Malton beats a dawn drive from Leeds or Harrogate. If you want the show as a half-day and the rest of the trip as proper North Yorkshire, York gives you the best base for a first visit.

Pickering itself is small: a market town of a few thousand people with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway terminus and a castle at the top of the hill. Parking near the station fills by 10am in July and August. Malton, 13 miles south, is the bigger, food-led alternative with a cattle market history and a genuinely good independent deli scene. Helmsley, 14 miles west of Pickering, sits on the edge of the moors and suits anyone who wants walking rather than shopping.

York, Malton or Helmsley: picking a base

York is the luxury end of the region and the easiest booking. Expect the strongest concentration of higher-grade hotels inside the bar walls, five to ten minutes' walk from York station, with rates climbing sharply for Friday and Saturday nights and during York Races meetings at the Knavesmire in May, June, July, August and October. Midweek, outside race fixtures and the school holidays, is noticeably cheaper. Book a room with parking if you are driving to Thornton-le-Dale, because city-centre car parks charge by the day and space is tight.

Malton and Helmsley are the better-value options, typically a step down in price from York and a step up in quiet. Malton has the advantage of a railway station on the York–Scarborough line, useful if you want to leave the car behind for a day in York. Helmsley trades convenience for setting: the ruined castle, the walled garden, and quick access to the Cleveland Way. For a two-night trip built around the auction, I would book Malton; for a week with York as the centrepiece, I would book York and drive out once.

When to come and what to skip

Late April to June and September are the sweet spots: lighter crowds, long evenings, and moorland roads that are not yet solid with caravans. July and August bring the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at full timetable and the best weather, plus the highest room rates and the worst traffic through Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. Winter is cheap and atmospheric in York — the Minster, the Shambles, the Museum Gardens — but daylight is short and some moorland tearooms shut midweek.

Skip the idea of 'seeing the moors' in a single afternoon. The A169 over Blakey Ridge to Hutton-le-Hole is a slow, beautiful road, not a shortcut. Skip Whitby on a summer Saturday unless you leave before nine; the A171 into town can take an hour from Sleights. And skip staying directly in Thornton-le-Dale unless you have found a specific self-catering cottage — the village has very little hotel stock, and you will end up driving for dinner anyway.

Practicalities the partner's guests ask about

If you are arriving by train, York is the only sensible base of the three: direct services from London King's Cross in under two hours, plus the Coastliner and local buses. Malton is 25 minutes from York by train and worth it if you want a quieter evening. Helmsley has no station — you need a car or a taxi from Malton, roughly 20 minutes. For the auction itself, check the day's schedule before you commit, since filming days are not visitor days and access is limited; the village is best treated as a stop, not an event.

For a comfortable trip, aim for three nights minimum: one for York's walls and Minster, one for the moors and the railway, one for the coast or the Howardian Hills. Eat in Malton or Helmsley rather than waiting for the villages, where kitchens close early. Fill the tank before the A170 — petrol stations thin out badly past Pickering. And book accommodation as early as you would for the Dales; North Yorkshire's good rooms go first in race weeks and school holidays.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Grassington, answered with this month’s numbers.

How far is Thornton-le-Dale from York?

About 26 miles by road, usually 50 minutes to an hour via the A64 and A169. Allow longer on summer weekends, when Pickering and the A170 slow to a crawl.

Which town is best for a luxury stay near the Bangers & Cash site?

York, without question. It has the region's deepest stock of higher-grade hotels, all within walking distance of the station and the Minster. Malton and Helmsley are quieter and usually better value, but a notch below on facilities.

When should I book for a North Yorkshire trip?

Late April to June or September for weather and space. Avoid York Races weekends if you want a reasonable rate, and book three to six months ahead for summer, longer for the August school holidays.
