Bedale for Couples: A Romantic Market-Town Stay in October 2026
2 The Square, Grassington: Honest Verdict for Solo Young Travellers
Bedale pairs a Georgian market square with the southern gateway to Wensleydale — and late October is when the Dales turn gold and the crowds thin out.
Bedale sits just off the A1(M) at junction 51, which makes it the easiest Dales town to reach if you are arriving by car from the south. Leeds is about an hour, York around 50 minutes, Newcastle roughly 70. The town itself is small — you can walk the whole of the Market Place, past the 14th-century St Gregory's Church and the Leech House on the bridge over Bedale Beck, in fifteen minutes. That compactness is the point: park once, and everything is on foot for the evening.
For couples, the appeal is a proper market town that has not been flattened into a tourist village. There is a Thursday market, a handful of independent shops along North End and South End, and the Wensleydale Railway heritage line running west from Bedale station towards Leyburn. In October 2026 the half-term week falls late in the month, so the first three weekends give you autumn colour with quieter pubs. Book those weekends early — Bedale has limited rooms and they fill for weddings and the Bedale Bonfire weekend.
Bedale's accommodation splits three ways. In the town centre you have small coaching-inn style hotels and pubs with rooms around the Market Place, typically £110–£170 a night for a double in October, breakfast often included. A mile or two out, towards Aiskew and Leeming Bar, there are larger hotels with car parks, spas and leisure clubs, usually £130–£220. Then there is the self-catering route — converted barns around Firby, Crakehall and Patrick Brompton, from about £95 a night for a week-long booking, cheaper per night the longer you stay.
My recommendation for a couple on a two- or three-night October break: book a pub with rooms on or within a two-minute walk of the Market Place. You get the walk-home-in-the-dark romance, you can both drink, and you are not driving to dinner. Skip the out-of-town spa hotels unless you specifically want a pool — you will spend your evenings in a taxi or a car. Skip anything marketed as 'near Bedale' if it sits past Leeming Bar; that is really Northallerton territory.
The classic half-day is the Wensleydale Railway west to Leyburn, roughly 40 minutes each way, with the dale in full autumn colour. Afterwards, drive or walk the A684 through Aysgarth and ask about the falls — the National Park car park at Aysgarth Falls is about 30 minutes from Bedale. For something closer, Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale is at its best in the last week of October for colour, and the Himalayan Garden at Grewelthorpe is around 25 minutes away. Both need pre-booked slots in half-term.
Evenings are simple and good. The pubs around the Market Place do solid Yorkshire food — expect £14–£20 for a main — and you can walk between them. If you want one smarter dinner, book ahead for somewhere in Bedale or drive 20 minutes to Masham, where the Black Sheep Brewery tap and the two brewery-run pubs are worth the trip. Bring a waterproof and proper shoes: late October in the Dales means 8–12°C days, early dusk around 16:45, and mud on every footpath.
Northallerton is the nearest mainline station, about 15 minutes by taxi from Bedale; that connects to York, Newcastle and London King's Cross. If you are coming by train, ask your hotel about a local taxi number before you arrive, because the Northallerton rank can be thin on a Sunday evening. Driving is far simpler: the A1(M) puts Bedale within a day's reach of most of England, and parking in the town is mostly free or a couple of pounds in the Market Place bays.
For October 2026, book accommodation by late August. Two-night Friday–Sunday stays are the first to go. Check whether your rate includes breakfast — in Bedale it often does and it is worth £20–£30 for two. Use the search above to compare live availability in Bedale itself rather than the surrounding villages, and if the town is full, widen to Masham or Leyburn before you consider Northallerton, which has no Dales feel at all.
Before you book
The questions people ask about Grassington, answered with this month’s numbers.
Yes, if you want a walkable market town with easy Dales access. It suits couples who will eat and drink in the town in the evening and drive out to Aysgarth, Leyburn or Thorp Perrow by day. Less ideal if you want a spa or nightlife.
Train to Northallerton, then a taxi of about 15 minutes. Direct services reach Northallerton from York, Newcastle and London King's Cross. Once in Bedale everything central is walkable, but the Dales sights need a car or a booked taxi.
Aim for late August 2026, especially for the first three weekends before half-term, which are the quietest and most popular with couples. Bedale has a small number of central rooms, so weekend doubles sell out well before the month itself.
